Graduate education, leading either to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Geology or Geophysics, is a major focus of the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming. The goal of the graduate program is to give students the best possible preparation for recognizing and solving problems in the geological sciences. With this in mind, the professors and research scientists work together to integrate instruction, application, and research.
At UW you'll find:
- A top-notch faculty. Our faculty is dedicated to distinction in research and graduate education. Faculty research is characterized by numerous interdisciplinary collaborations and a remarkably collegial atmosphere.
- Critical mass and stimulating peers. Students interact with a faculty of 24, a graduate student population of about 60, and undergraduate majors numbering 120. There's always someone to learn from, and to share an idea with.

- State-of-the-art facilities. Our department has top-notch computer, laboratory, and library facilities, from electron microprobes and mass spectrometers to geophysical field equipment and image processing software. The recently completed Brinkerhoff Earth Resources Information Center is a major asset for the effective pursuit and completion of a graduate program.
- A supportive environment. We are committed to providing a supportive -- yet challenging -- research environment for our students. Graduate student life is characterized by a remarkable sense of collaboration and a terrific esprit-de-corps.

Graduate Application
The application for graduate study in the G&G department is a two-stage process:
- The first stage is to apply directly to our department -- we conduct the initial review of applications within the department, so that a match between students and prospective advisors can be made quickly and effectively. The application at this stage is free. Please do no apply through the UW Graduate School. All inquiries regarding the status of your application should be directed to Sondra Cawley, our academic coordinator, or a faculty member in our department.
- The second stage, which only occurs once you've been accepted to the department, is to fill out the official UW Graduate School application and submit the $50 application fee. Please do not do this until you are instructed to by someone in our department. This saves you $50 and saves the Graduate School a lot of unnecessary paperwork. Thanks!
A complete application consists of 1)department application form; 2) three recommendation forms; 3) GRE report 4) 2 official transcripts. All materials should be sent directly to the Department of Geology and Geophysics. Remember, there is no fee to apply at this point in the process. Students whose native language is not English are required to furnish scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 525 is required.
Applications are due by January 15 of each year. The department application doubles as an application for assistantships. Questions about the application process should be directed to our Academic Coordinator (307) 766-3389 or by email at acadcoord_gg@uwyo.edu.
